Every tool ran the same battery of sources: a modern portrait, an old family photo, an e-commerce product shot, and a Midjourney illustration. The criteria, procedures, and per-tool marks are below.
How we tested
All five tools were tested in July 2026 on their current paid tiers (or the free desktop build, where that is the headline product); scores reflect the versions available in that window. Criteria are weighted toward faithful-photo upscaling and per-image cost, with creative reinvention scored as a separate dimension so a creative-only tool isn't penalized for being what it is.
Faithful Photo Upscaling
Each tool upscaled the same four real-photo sources (a modern 24 MP portrait cropped to 1024 px, a 640×480 scanned family photo, a compressed 320×240 JPEG from 2004, and a 2000 px product shot) at 4× using the tool's default 'faithful' or 'standard' model. Two reviewers scored each output blind against the original on detail recovery, artifact introduction, and color fidelity, and we averaged the marks.
Creative Detail on AI Art
Each tool upscaled the same three AI-generated sources (a 1024×1024 Midjourney portrait, a 1024×1024 stylized illustration, and a 512×512 concept render) at 4× using the tool's creative or generative mode where offered, with a moderate creativity setting; reviewers scored the output on invented-texture plausibility and cohesion, and tools without a creative mode were scored on their standard model.
Privacy & Local Processing
We recorded whether the tool runs locally on the user's GPU or uploads source images to a cloud server, whether the vendor's terms permit training on customer images, and whether a fully offline workflow is available; local processing scored highest, cloud-only lowest.
Cost per Usable Image
For each tool we priced one month on the entry-level paid plan (or free build) and divided by the number of 4× upscales it permitted at that plan's real ceiling, then re-ran the four faithful test images and counted how many required zero post-editing to land the effective cost per usable output.
Batch & Print Workflow
We ran a 25-image batch through each tool at a target of 300 DPI at A2 print size, recorded whether batch processing was native, whether the output cleared 256 MP where the plan allowed it, and whether the tool exposed a print-ready preset or explicit DPI control; missing controls that forced manual per-image work were marked down.

Why Topaz leads on real photography
Topaz Gigapixel wins the criterion that decides this category for most working photographers: faithful enlargement of a real image without inventing detail that wasn’t there. On the modern portrait, the scanned family photo, and the compressed 2004 JPEG in our test, its output was the sharpest and the most restrained, and the ability to pick the right model per source (Standard, High Fidelity, Recover v2, Redefine Creative, and others) is a real advantage over one-model rivals. The Bloom diffusion model adds a creative option in the same app when a source benefits from invented texture.
The trade-offs are the honest ones for a subscription-first desktop tool. Topaz Labs ended perpetual licenses in September 2025, so a longtime Gigapixel user who paid $99 once now pays annually to keep receiving new models; a capable GPU is effectively required for practical speed; and on stylized AI-art sources, Magnific’s dedicated creative pipeline is still ahead. For anyone whose upscaling work is mostly real photographs, those are acceptable costs.
When to reach for Magnific instead
If the source is a Midjourney render, a Stable Diffusion output, a Flux illustration, or a low-resolution concept sketch, Magnific is the tool. It’s free under AGPL-3.0, runs locally on Windows, macOS, or Linux, has no watermark and no cap, and its Real-ESRGAN-based models produce results genuinely close to Topaz at 2× and defensible at 4× on clean sources. The catch is real: you need a Vulkan-compatible GPU, and on the hardest portraits or heavily blurred sources, the paid engines pull ahead. But for social, web, moderate print, and rescuing compressed JPEGs, this is the first thing to install. Pay for a subscription only if free isn’t enough for your specific images.
What did not make the cut
Let’s Enhance is a credible cloud specialist with the strongest print-workflow toolkit in our test (explicit 300 DPI presets, up to 500 MP output on business plans, and six content-specific models) and it earns a recommendation for print-on-demand and e-commerce teams who work at that scale. The weakness is the credit math: at one credit per image on Starter, and no genuine free tier past 10 lifetime credits, it’s expensive at volume compared with Upscayl (free) or an annual Topaz seat.
VanceAI is the one tool in our test that we mark Not Recommended at its current output quality. It’s genuinely cheap, and the improvement over the source is real, but the fine-detail ceiling sits visibly below Let’s Enhance and Topaz on the same images, and the free-tier watermarking makes it hard to evaluate before paying. At its price it’s a plausible pick over nothing; at Upscayl’s price of zero, or Let’s Enhance’s price at a similar tier, the value calculation doesn’t work.
