How we tested
All five apps were evaluated between September 1 and September 5, 2026 against each vendor's current official pricing page, help center, and Shopify App Store listing. No live store install occurred; scores are a documentation and pricing comparison against a fixed rubric weighted toward cost-to-value for founder-led Shopify DTC stores under 1,000 monthly orders.
Real Cost at Small-Store Volume
For each app, we recorded the published price and included order cap at three volumes a small Shopify store actually operates at (200, 500, and 2,500 monthly orders) using the vendor's own pricing page, then flagged any documented per-order overage charge, annual-billing requirement, or tier cap that would force an upgrade before the next feature the merchant would want.
Feature Depth on the Entry Paid Plan
We read each vendor's pricing table and help center and recorded which of six mechanics are available on the lowest paid tier: a points program, a referral program, VIP tiers, points expiry, checkout redemption, and a native integration with Klaviyo. Missing features counted against the score in proportion to how often small-store operators use them.
Shopify Integration Quality
We recorded whether each app carries Shopify's Built for Shopify badge, whether it supports Shopify POS on the entry paid plan, whether it exposes public API access on any tier below enterprise, and how many checkout extensions the vendor documents on its pricing page.
AI & Personalization Features
We recorded which AI or automated-personalization features the vendor documents on its own site as of September 2026 (AI-recommended rewards, ML segmentation, automated flows, wallet-pass personalization, points expiry automation, referral fraud detection) and on which plan they appear, treating claims that appear only on third-party listings as unverified and unscored.
Pricing Transparency & Contract Terms
We checked whether every plan tier is published (rather than "contact sales"), whether contracts are month-to-month or annual by default, whether a genuine free plan exists (not a limited free trial), and whether a per-order overage rate is disclosed on the pricing page itself.
We evaluated each app on the same rubric against the vendor’s own pricing page and Shopify App Store listing, so the differences below come from the products, not the briefs. The full test plan and per-criterion marks are above; the notes here cover where the ranking turned.
Why Smile.io still leads for the smallest stores
Smile.io wins the dimension that decides this category for a founder-led shop: the cost of routine use at low volume.
Smile.io’s free plan supports up to 200 monthly orders and includes core loyalty features like points, referrals, discounts and free shipping rewards, full branding customization, and multi-language support
, which is a genuinely sustainable program rather than a trial.
The trade-offs are documented on Smile.io’s own pricing structure.
API access and priority support are reserved for Smile.io’s Plus plan at $999/month
, and the jump from Starter to Growth exists to unlock VIP tiers. For a store under 200 monthly orders that just wants a working points and referral program, none of that matters yet. Once you cross the free cap, the calculation changes, and that’s where Rivo enters the picture. Loyalty is one piece of a small store’s retention stack; the neighboring decisions on testimonial collection and referral software are worth making with the same rubric.
When to choose Rivo instead
Rivo is the tool we recommend the moment a Shopify store outgrows Smile.io’s 200-order free tier and wants VIP tiers or paid memberships without stepping up to a $199/month plan. Rivo’s Shopify App Store listing states that the Scale plan
includes 400 orders for $49/mo, then $20 per 100 more, capped at $499/mo regardless of volume
, which is the flattest published cost curve we found in the category. The listing documents four tiers:
Free ($0/month) for up to 200 monthly orders; Essential ($15/month) for up to 500 monthly orders with Shopify POS integration and 24/7 human support; Scale ($49/month) with VIP Tiers, Points Expiry, Bonus Campaigns, and the Referrals Program; and Plus ($499/month) for up to 2,500 orders with Custom Integrations, Advanced Analytics, the Rivo Developer Toolkit, and Checkout Extensions
.
Rivo is also the only app in our test that ships a paid-memberships product line.
Rivo Memberships lets you create paid or free membership tiers with different benefits for each level of access. Memberships can be used for paid loyalty programs, subscription-style perks, members-only rewards, and enhanced earning rates.
The catch is scope: Rivo is Shopify-only, and Custom Integrations (including Klaviyo events), Checkout Extensions, and the Developer Toolkit sit on the $499 Plus plan.
When BON Loyalty is the right specialist
For a small store shipping internationally, BON Loyalty is the credible budget pick. Its own pricing page states
transparent pricing with no contracts, setup fees, or hidden costs; you won’t have to pay extra for order limits or be caught by pay-as-you-go fees like other loyalty platforms
, and the published plan ladder is
Free at $0, Starter at $15, Basic at $29, Growth at $129, and Plus (let’s talk) per month
. The differentiator is language coverage. BON’s pricing page lists
250+ displayed languages
as a feature of the Basic plan and above, unusual at that price point. It’s a narrow specialty, but for a founder selling into EU or APAC markets it removes a translation layer that would otherwise cost more than the app itself.
When Yotpo Loyalty is worth the $199
Yotpo Loyalty is the answer only for brands already running Yotpo Reviews or already committed to Yotpo across multiple product lines. On Yotpo’s own pricing page,
Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals has a free plan at $0/month to get started. The Pro plan starts at $199/month and includes your first 500 monthly orders; above that, a small per-order rate applies as you grow (for example, $0.20 per order from 501-1,000, dropping to $0.10 and then $0.05 at higher volumes). Premium and Enterprise are custom-quoted.
The Pro tier is a real product:
Pro adds more ways for shoppers to earn points (creating an account, birthdays, anniversaries, social follows, leaving reviews, signing up for SMS), flexible point redemption, points expiration, a customizable rewards page, checkout redemption, live chat support, and integrations with tools like Klaviyo, Recharge, and ShoppingGives
. But at 1,500 monthly orders the effective cost is $199 base plus $200 in per-order overages, or $399/month, which is hard to justify against a $49 Rivo Scale plan that includes the same core mechanics. If you’re choosing an email marketing platform at the same time, factor that separately.
Why LoyaltyLion falls to fifth for small stores
LoyaltyLion is a good product for the wrong buyer here. Its own pricing page states that
stores can access a 14-day free trial via the Shopify App Store; LoyaltyLion also recommends its free plan to stores processing 400 orders or fewer per month, and the free plan includes all the simple features you need to get started, and you can add optional enhancements as your program grows
. The problem for a small store is the paid step-up:
LoyaltyLion starts at $199 per month for the Classic plan, a flat rate that includes 500 orders monthly; a free version and free trial are available. Advanced and Plus have no listed prices, and the higher tiers add VIP tiers, subscriptions, automation, and cross-store rewards.
On the current feature table, some of the automation features a small store would expect are gated further:
the Plus plan adds AI recommended rewards, discounts and optimal timing to increase campaign conversion and repeat purchases; Advanced Klaviyo Events; and Automated LoyaltyLion Flows
, and LoyaltyLion’s official feature table lists Automated LoyaltyLion Flows, Advanced Klaviyo Events, and Attentive SMS events as optional add-ons rather than standard inclusions on any plan tier.
For a multi-platform store already running Shopify plus BigCommerce or a headless storefront, LoyaltyLion earns a shortlist spot. For a founder-led Shopify shop with 300 monthly orders and a working AI CRM, it’s a step too far. The ranking above is a starting point, not a final answer; validate the current price against each vendor’s pricing page before you install anything, and match the plan to your actual monthly order count, not the feature you wish you had.
Questions Readers Ask
Which loyalty app should a small Shopify store install first?
Smile.io for a store under 200 monthly orders, on the strength of a free plan that includes core loyalty features like points, referrals, discounts and free shipping rewards, full branding customization, and multi-language support. Once the store passes the free cap, Rivo's Scale plan at $49/month (400 included orders) includes VIP tiers and referrals at a price point where Smile.io still charges $199 for the same mechanics.
Is there a genuinely free loyalty program for Shopify in 2026?
Yes, several, but read the caps. Smile.io's free plan supports up to 200 monthly orders. Rivo's Free plan supports stores with up to 200 orders per month. Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals has a free plan at $0/month that includes a basic points and referral program, fraud prevention, and performance dashboards. LoyaltyLion recommends its free plan to stores processing 400 orders or fewer per month. BON Loyalty's free plan supports up to 150 monthly orders. None of these free plans include VIP tiers.
Which app is cheapest above 500 monthly orders?
Rivo, based on published pricing. Rivo's Scale plan includes 400 orders for $49/mo, then $20 per 100 more, capped at $499/mo regardless of volume. Yotpo's Pro plan is $199/month for the first 500 orders and $0.20 per order between 501 and 1,000, so a 1,500-order month on Yotpo Pro totals $199 base plus $200 overage, or $399. Smile.io's Growth plan is $199/month with a 2,500-order cap. LoyaltyLion's Classic is published from $199/month for 500 orders.
Do any of these apps offer paid memberships instead of a free points program?
Rivo. Rivo Memberships lets a store create paid or free membership tiers with different benefits for each level of access, and can be used for paid loyalty programs, subscription-style perks, members-only rewards, and enhanced earning rates. Smile.io, BON, Yotpo Loyalty, and LoyaltyLion don't currently offer paid memberships as a native product line at any published tier.
Why did LoyaltyLion not earn a higher recommendation?
LoyaltyLion is a capable platform, especially for multi-platform brands running Shopify plus BigCommerce or a headless storefront. But the Classic plan is published from $199/month for 500 orders, while Advanced and Plus are custom-quoted, and LoyaltyLion's official feature table lists Advanced Klaviyo Events, Automated LoyaltyLion Flows, and Attentive SMS events as optional add-ons rather than standard inclusions on any plan tier. For a small store buying loyalty for the first time, the entry price is high, and the upper tiers require a sales conversation before you know the number.
