How we tested
All four platforms were evaluated between September 2 and September 12, 2026 against each vendor's currently published pricing and feature pages. Scores weight AI depth in the estimate itself and true monthly cost most heavily, because those are the two dimensions small home service businesses report as the deciding factors when they switch.
AI Depth in the Estimate
We read each vendor's own AI feature and pricing pages and recorded which AI capabilities actually touch the quote itself (photo-to-quote generation, in-document chat editing, AI-drafted line items and descriptions, before/after preview images) versus AI that only advises around it (business coaching, marketing copy, chat Q&A). Platforms that build the estimate scored highest; platforms whose AI only answers questions about the estimate scored lowest.
Entry Cost With AI Included
We priced the cheapest plan on each vendor's official pricing page that includes the AI features touching the quote and the customer-facing phone or booking flow, and recorded whether the AI receptionist / AI call answering feature is bundled or sold as a separate line item at that entry tier.
Follow-Up and Booking Workflow
We recorded whether each platform offers automated quote follow-up sequences, an AI receptionist that books jobs 24/7, two-way SMS on the entry plan, and a self-serve customer portal for approval and payment, verified against each vendor's published feature and pricing pages.
Small-Team Scalability (1-15 users)
We priced a five-user configuration on each platform using each vendor's official pricing page (base plan, per-user overage charges, and required add-ons to reach the same feature parity) and recorded the true monthly bill a five-person crew actually pays.
Trade Fit for Home Services
We read each vendor's published trade pages and integration lists and recorded which home service trades the platform names as primary (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, cleaning, landscaping, pressure washing, roofing, garage door, etc.) and which trade-specific tooling (aerial measurement, service agreements, pricebook depth, exterior measurement) is native versus paid add-on versus absent.
We compared each platform against its own current pricing and feature pages, so the differences below come down to what each vendor ships and charges, not to a demo experience.
Why QuoteIQ leads
QuoteIQ wins the dimension that decides this category for a small home service crew: the cost of actually getting AI into the estimate.
Its AI Estimator analyzes up to 5 property photos, scores the job description, runs local market analysis for the service area, and assembles line items from the business’s own service catalog in 4-7 minutes instead of the 20-34 minutes a manual quote takes.
Photo-to-quote generation and in-document AI editing are QuoteIQ-only capabilities in this market right now.
The full AI stack is on the entry plan, not gated behind a premium tier.
AI CoPilot is a chat-based AI assistant that lives directly inside the estimate and invoice creation screens. You can type or speak prompts to modify the document you’re working on, add services, set discounts, change tax rates, draft client messages, add deposits, and mark items as additional. AI Autopilot, by contrast, is a standalone chat interface that controls the entire CRM. Both features run on IQ Credits and are available on every QuoteIQ plan.
The trade-offs are real but narrow. IQ Credits meter AI usage, so a heavy user eventually upgrades a tier.
Regenerating a Before & After image costs credits again, so pick your shot before you render.
And customer-facing self-quoting (InstaQuote) is a higher-tier feature. For a 1-to-5 person crew that just wants a priced quote out the door before the truck leaves the driveway, those are acceptable costs for the strongest value in the category.
When to choose Jobber instead
Jobber is the tool we recommend for a small home service business that already runs its schedule, invoicing, and payments in an FSM and wants a light AI copilot rather than an AI-native workflow.
Jobber is field service management software for service businesses, from solo operators to multi-crew operations, bringing quoting, scheduling, job management, invoicing, payments, and customer communication into one place.
The AI layer is real:
Jobber AI is a built-in business assistant, available via Chat on web and mobile and Voice on mobile. Ask it anything about your business and it gives tailored recommendations based on your data. It can also draft quotes, suggest automations to turn on, create marketing content, and answer product questions. Rewrite improves client messages instantly, and the AI-powered Receptionist answers calls and texts, captures leads, and books jobs automatically.
The friction is pricing.
Jobber publishes three add-ons (Marketing Suite at $99/month, Receptionist at $29/month, and Pipeline at $49/month) and all three are included on the Plus plan and sold separately on Core, Connect, and Grow.
Every user beyond a team plan’s included count is $29/month.
Jobber Copilot, its built-in AI, is a free advisory assistant that answers questions rather than an agent that answers your phone.
When Housecall Pro is the right call
Housecall Pro is the pick for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical shops where the estimate presentation is the deciding factor and the customer expects a ‘good-better-best’ proposal on the tablet.
Its Sales Proposal Tool now supports new layout options: a List layout for quick single-option estimates (available to all Pros), a Stacked layout for giving customers multiple options they can approve together (available to Sales Proposal Tool users), and a Side-by-side layout for good, better, best choices where customers pick one option (available to Sales Proposal Tool users).
The AI Team is a central part of the platform.
Marketing AI, CSR AI, Analyst AI, and Coach AI are surfaced across Housecall Pro; CSR AI answers customer calls today, with chat and text support listed as coming soon.
The trade-off is the tier structure:
Housecall Pro’s Basic plan starts at $59/month billed annually or $79/month billed monthly and includes one user, with the stacked and side-by-side Sales Proposal layouts limited to Sales Proposal Tool users.
A five-tech HVAC shop that needs the Sales Proposal tool’s multi-option layouts ends up above the Basic tier by the time all the required pieces are on.
What didn’t make the cut
Workiz is a strong specialist for one job (answering the phone and booking work when the crew is on-site) and its Genius AI is a real product, not a marketing slide.
Genius Leads and Genius Scheduling are gated to Workiz’s Pro plan and above, and Genius Answering is pitched as an AI that answers every call, email, and SMS instantly, 24/7 so no lead slips through.
The pricing is where it loses the ranking.
Workiz’s pricing page lists three tiers (Standard, Pro, and Ultimate) all on a ‘Request pricing’ basis, with no public monthly rate posted. Genius Phone, Genius Answering, and Genius Marketing are all explicitly labeled ‘sold separately’ on that same page, and the features most small crews would want (sales proposals, service plans, inventory management, and 30 automations) are gated to the Ultimate tier.
Workiz’s own pricing page states ‘Genius Phone (sold separately)’ and ‘Genius Answering (sold separately)’ for the integrated phone system and the AI answering service that make Workiz genuinely differentiated.
For a small home service crew, an FSM that won’t post its own base rate is a hard yes to sign up for when the alternatives have public pricing on the same page as the feature list. The platform is the right answer only when phone volume is the primary bottleneck, not when the job is faster, better estimates.
An AI estimate is the front end of a much longer customer-getting workflow. Two adjacent tools are worth pairing with whichever platform you land on: an AI missed-call text-back tool to catch the leads a busy crew misses during the day, and an AI appointment reminder tool to cut no-shows once a quote turns into a booked job. After the work is done, an AI review request tool closes the loop by pulling the customer’s own words into the Google Business Profile that feeds the next round of leads. If the FSM you pick already handles two of those, you can skip the standalone tool; if you’re staying on a light CRM instead, our guide to the AI CRMs we recommend for small businesses covers what to run alongside the estimate flow.
